The Range

Not far from the mountains, where the Murray still runs deep and clear, is a great curve in the river. Planted here is our vineyard where gnarled old vines send their roots deep into the rose-coloured sandy soils. Premium wines have been made and enjoyed here at St Leonards since 1860.

The Wine

Not all Rutherglen reds are big tannic wines. St Leonards Cabernet Franc produces a distinctly lighter and more savoury style with a wonderful lifted aroma of red fruit and dried herbs. Well balanced with zippy acidity, lively fruit and just a hint of oak.

Variety

Cabernet Franc is one of those versatile varieties that are hard to pin-down. It can be used successfully for anything from a Rosé to a robust red. It does very well on our St Leonard’s soils producing lively reds with lovely savoury characters. As with many varieties its original homes are in France, where it makes light reds on the Loire and is one of the Bordeaux families of grapes used in traditional Claret.

Winemaking

This is one variety where the timing of harvest is crucial. We are looking to produce a light spicy wine, so the fruit comes off the vine before it becomes overly ripe, but has developed all the delicate aromatics and flavours of Cabernet Franc. The wine was fermented in old open fermenters and hand plunged over 7 days before a gentle pressing in the old basket press, then a portion went to old oak puncheons for 6 months with the balance staying in tank. These were then blended together prior to bottling.

Food Matching

With its fine, velvety texture, lighter body and lovely berry flavours this wine is perfect for all seasons and very versatile. With little or no oak influence it is best suited to foods with herbal characters rather than rich red meat. Try it with veal or roasted poultry particularly dishes featuring rosemary, sage or thyme. Some say it goes magnificently with slow roasted duck.

Cellaring Potential

The wine is not particularly tannic; hence it is not really built for long-term cellaring. It already has a nice mix of lovely sweet fruit and savoury spice characters and should be enjoyed ideally within three years of vintage.
