The Range

Comprising regional varietal wines of distinction, our Family Cellar range was created to be something special from the outset. The marriage of magnificent fruit from sustainable, old vineyards and traditional, hand-crafted winemaking techniques ensure beautifully balanced, elegant table wines that display a true sense of place.

The Wine

A portion of the fruit was hand picked and added as a partial whole bunch fermentation. This adds lifted sweet berry fruit aromas and more body and complexity to the finish of the wine. A complex and refined wine, rich and intense but not heavy it is full of aromas of plum, dried herbs and spice with ripe dark berry-fruit flavours and fine structural tannins with incredible length.

Variety

Shiraz is Australia’s favourite red grape. It is most impressive in the Rhone Valley of France, where it makes wines so great that we borrowed not only the variety, but the name as well! What we left to the French was the techniques they use in the vineyard and cellars. We are now rediscovering these old ways of doing things.

Winemaking

Our aim is to produce a wine of finesse and subtlety and so the fruit was picked ripe, but no more. A portion of the front block was hand picked to allow for 10% whole bunch added to the fermenter. The balance was destemmed and crushed before fermentation in our old open concrete vats. After 24 months in French and American oak puncheons and barriques, 1/3 of which were new, the wine was bottled with minimal fining and filtration.

Food Matching

Great Shiraz from this region has lovely rich fruit and a characteristic mineral, briny element. This makes it a great match for locally reared premium Rutherglen lamb, perhaps roasted and stuffed or studded with herbs, garlic and pancetta.

Cellaring Potential

The long maceration makes for very stable tannins in a well-balanced wine. Also the fact that it is not excessively ripe and alcoholic gives the wine tremendous capacity to age. This Shiraz should improve for a decade or even more.

"A powerhouse of concentration with its umami flavours of soy sauce, molasses and licorice with a whiff of boot polish and oak too. It's full-bodied, dense with expansive tannins, yet there's a freshness and vitality here to ensure it'll please for more than a few years to come."
Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion, August 2018
