A blend of the rarest, richest and most complete wines in the cellar, some dating back over 50 years. The combination of great age, complex rancio characters and skillful blending has created a wine with an intensely complex palate with tea leaf, old oak, molasses and malty flavours. A Rutherglen masterpiece.
Great for sipping on its own, with cheese or the very best chocolates. This wine has already done its aging. Best consumed within a year of purchase.
The fruit is handpicked when the sugar is high and the fruit then crushed to release its sweet, concentrated juice. Pre-fermentation cold soaking swells the shrivelled berries and extracts flavour from the skins before undergoing minimal fermentation prior to fortification at 18%. The finished wine is a blend of selected vintages, stored in large oak foudres and racked into bottle as required.
Originally thought to come from the Hungarian Tokai variety, it is now accepted that Australian styles are made from the Muscadelle grape, a white varietal. Muscadelle has been grown at All Saints Estate since the winery was established in 1864. The current vines were planted during 1962 and 1963. The long, warm Autumn days at Wahgunyah are perfect for allowing the fruit to ripen to the high baumé levels and raisining so essential for the style.
Rutherglen Muscadelles are classified into four tiers that mark a progression in richness, complexity and intensity of flavour, due to the age of wines used. Our fortified classification at All Saints Estate is:
Rutherglen Muscadelle 5-8 years
Classic Rutherglen Muscadelle 12-14 years
Grand Rutherglen Muscadelle 20-25 years
Rare Rutherglen Muscadelle 30+ years
