Halliday Wine Companion 2021

All Saints Estate

The winery rating reflects the fortified wines and table wines alike. The one-hat Terrace restaurant makes this a must-stop for any visitor to North East Victoria, as does the National Trust-listed property with its towering castle centrepiece. All Saints and St Leonards are owned and managed by fourth-generation Brown family members Eliza, Angela and Nick. Eliza is an energetic and highly intelligent leader, wise beyond her years, and highly regarded by the wine industry. The Brown family celebrated the winery’s 150th anniversary in 2014. Exports to the UK, the US, Canada, Singapore and China.

GOLD - 99 points – AWARD WINNING VARIETAL

Intensity, complexity and quality are beyond measure and words. James Halliday's note in the 2020 Wine Companion it says it all. 'Its concentration and searing intensity are such that you want to physically bite the wine. Amid the fireworks and white-light display there is a certain calm of the so-fine spirit, the sweet/sour flavours of ancient balsamic vinegar amazing.' 375ml.

The full biscuit if ever there was one. The concentration of flavour here is immense to say the least, and while of course it's warmwith alcohol, inherent to both the style and the concept, it's remarkable how the density of flavour essentially buries the alcohol in its big warm arms. In a word: monumental. In two: life affirming. 500ml.

Grand Rutherglen Tawny NV – 97 points

GOLD – 97 Points (Special Value)

Stunning concentration of flavour and both the balance and complexity to match. It's quite alarmingly good. Burnt toffee, raisin, rancio and sweet tea flavours put on a wonderful show. It goes on with it, and then some, on the finish as well.

GOLD - 96 points

The green olive hue to this wine's pools of brown is an experience in itself. It starts and finishes with butterscotch, slippery texture and all, but in between there's a world of spice, dried fruits, honey and more. The word mind-blowing springs. 375ml.

Treacle is the word. This boasts tremendous intensity, its treacle, chocolate, honey and raisin characters lifted by inherent rancio. This is luscious to say the least but most impressively it also soars on from the finish.

Grand Rutherglen Muscadelle NV – 95 points

GOLD – 95 Points

Concentration of flavour is excellent as you'd expect but the range and complexity is another level again. This is a river as wide as it is deep. Intense raisin, tobacco, prune, butterscotch and toast flavours put on a charismatic display. Semblances of dusty dried herbs enter the fray. It's quite excellent.

Classic Rutherglen Muscadelle NV – 95 points

GOLD – 95 Points

Seriously good. Terrific intensity of butterscotch, green olive, burnt toffee and rancio flavours. It all follows through on the finish. Bowls you over with both its concentration of flavour and sheer quality. 375ml.

All Saints Estate Family Cellar Durif 2016 – 94 points

SILVER - 94 Points

It's a malty, licoricey red with baked plum, prune and saltbush characters pushing it straight into fullbodied territory. There's ample tannin here but fruit flavour swamps straight on through. It has very good shape in the mouth, despite its overdone/overcooked nature, and certainly packs plenty into the glass.

All Saints Estate Pierre 2017 – 94 points

SILVER - 94 points

51% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 25% cabernet franc. Matured in French oak, 28% new. It has both control and oomph. It's run with flavour and it spreads through the finish. We're in excellent territory here. Currants, cloves, wood smoke, dried herbs and a sweet vanilla character. It's built for the future but it's so well balanced that you could easily drink it now.

All Saints Estate Family Cellar Shiraz 2016 – 93 points

SILVER – 93 Points

Its sweet fruit profile makes it appear simple but smoked cedar wood notes help spread the load. You get a dense serve of ripe, berried fruit flavour and - while it feels dark and pushed-to-the-limits - it also presents as fresh and even-toned. Indeed it's a balanced red with plenty of grunt.

Butterscotch flavours flow straight at you, bringing brown sugary spice and raisin characters with them. Needless to say it tastes delicious. You can't go wrong at this price.

The spirit is pretty obvious but so to is the wealth of flavour. This boasts both freshness and depth. Raisins, choc, exotic spices and treacle. Good depth. Good zip. Lovely.
