The location  Rutherglen is a rich wine-growing region in Victoria's high country, 10 kilometres from the Murray River. The All Saints Winery is the largest and best-known local operation among dozens of boutique offerings. Cellar-door tastings and farm-gate produce draw foodies from across the state to discuss vines and blends with fourth-generation vignerons.

The place Renaissance Farm B&B is a rambling country farmhouse, with former outbuildings converted into two rooms with ensuites, queen beds, small sitting areas and kitchenettes. Private courtyards flank the rooms, and home-made biscuits, chocolates and a local muscat welcome new arrivals. A billiard room and dining room in the main house are open to guests and gourmet home-cooked meals are available by arrangement. Renaissance Chocolates is also onsite, with a Couverture and Coffee Room open four days a week for coffee, hand-made chocolate and light meals.

The experience  It's all about fine food and wine set against the backdrop of lush north-east Victorian scenery. The legacy of the gold rush is reflected in Rutherglen's heritage-listed buildings and wide main street. Acknowledged as one of the state's finest wine-growing regions, the area is boosting its boutique produce as well. A farmers' market in Rutherglen's Lions Park on the second Sunday of each month offers the best of local seasonal produce. A self-guided heritage walk shares the town's history, while cycle tracks offer a different way to explore the surrounds. Alternatively, mooch on foot around the historic main street with its collection of antique stores, bookshops and coffee houses.

Don't miss  Sampling the local produce. From olives and olive oil, to truffles, cherries, farmed rainbow trout and a meal at one of the many fine-dining restaurants, such as Tuileries in Rutherglen, there are plenty of great flavours to enhance the robust red and crisp white wines for which the region is renowned.
