Dinner With a Serve of History

For a meal steeped in history, head to the highly awarded Terrace Restaurant at Rutherglen's All Saints Estate. You'll find it housed in a 150-year-old turreted castle at a vineyard that produced its first wine in 1864.

"When we're feeling ritzy, we head to Terrace on a Saturday night," Rowly says. "Chef Simon Arkless never fails to deliver contemporary, delicate and beautifully plated food. The menu features estate-grown lamb and pork, and all organic waste is fed to the winery animals or used as compost on the vines. They even have a complimentary chaffeur to ferry you there and home (if arranged beforehand), so there's no need for a relationship breakdown over who gets to enjoy the wine."

 


On The Money

Opened in 2015 by the Brown siblings of All Saints Estate and Melbourne hospitality veteran Denis Lucey, Thousand Pound Wine Bar brings city slick to the country. It's a relaxed, modern space where you are likely to spot a local winemaker or two you may have met on your winery visits. The wine list is themed around family-owned Australian wineries and those abroad that the Browns have a special affliation with. Rowly is a big fan: "My Partner, Sally, and I helped drink the bar out of a very slurpable Domaine des Pomples rosé from Provence in Thousand Pound's first summer," he laughs. To go with your wine, the bar has a concise menu featuring small dishes such as house-made croquettes, pan-friend saganaki cheese, and fried school prawns and whitebait with chilli, garlic and wasabi mayonnaise.
