Marsanne came from the Rhone Valley in Southern France, where it had languished, unloved, for many years. Finally the French are realising what we, in the Rutherglen region of North Eastern Victoria, have known for generations, that Marsanne is a wonderful variety. Our vines are over 50 years old, resulting in fruit of uncommonly intense flavour.
A richly flavoured white wine with crisp acidity and subtle oak nuances. Indigenous fermentation in barrel and extended time on lees has resulted in a sweet white wine of complexity and finesse. An ideal match with Roast Chicken and root vegetables.
Marsanne responds well to modern techniques of cold fermentation in stainless steel. However, it can really shine when given minimalist, old style techniques such as hand harvesting and wild fermentation. This wine has a portion fermented in barrel with the balance in tank. Along with the tank balance the wine is in French oak and aged on the lees for 18 months.
We have been making Family Cellar Marsanne since the 2003 vintage and all have shown the ability to age well. This 2015 Marsanne should also cellar well for at least 4-5 years, perhaps longer.
This is a richly flavoured wine with crisp acidity and subtle oak. As such it will be a perfect foil for winter favourites such as simply prepared Roasted Chicken with Root Vegetables.
